Thank you for your interest in hosting an intern from the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.

We are committed to providing our students with meaningful industry experiences that complement their academic studies, and we greatly value the support of industry partners like you.

Internship Format

Internships can be conducted either in person, remotely, or a combination of both, depending on your organisation's capacity.

Internship Requirements

To participate in this program, students are required to:

  • Complete a minimum of 320 hours, and a maximum of 350 hours
  • Undertake the placement over a 10–16 week period
  • Students are required to be enrolled in the internship subject to receive academic credit.
  • Upon successful completion, students will receive academic credit as part of their degree requirements.

Important Information for Hosts

There is no obligation to host an intern until you have interviewed and selected a suitable candidate. Once a student has been selected, we will ask you to:

  • Sign our standard internship agreement
  • Comply with relevant occupational health and safety requirements
  • Support the student in meeting the learning objectives of the placement
  • The agreement needs to be signed and returned to our team before the student can commence work with you. All students are enrolled into the internship subject to receive academic credit.

International Student Visa Restrictions

Please note that Australian Student Visa conditions limit international students to 48 hours of work per fortnight. Accordingly, international students may participate in internships for up to 24 hours per week. For more details, see the Australian Home Affairs Website.

Organisation Details

Please note, that we require contact details for both the person completing this form, as well as the authorised signatory that will later sign our placement agreement.

Please provide the location of the office or workspace where the intern will be physically based.

If your organisation has multiple locations, please list the address of the specific site where the internship will occur. If the internship is remote, please list the primary location of the supervising team.

Tip: Organisations that attract the best talent stand out by also including videos on their website often from current employees. Focus on benefits or perks you offer like what skills they will acquire working for you, flexible start and finish times or training days

Health and Safety Management for Student Internships

The University of Melbourne is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all staff, students, contractors, and other personnel at locations under its management or control. The Health and Safety Policy (MPF1205) supports compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic).

1.0 OHS Management System or Plan

An OHS Management System or Plan is a set of formally documented plans, actions, and procedures to systematically manage health and safety in the workplace.

Larger organisations tend to have them; many smaller organisations don't. If you don't have one, don't worry. We are also happy to accept a copy of your OHS policy (just click no and the system will direct you accordingly).

4.0 Young Worker/Student Internship

As you will be engaging young workers and interns, you must agree to the following responsibilities:

  • Provide employees and interns with information, instructions, training, and supervision needed to perform their job safely.
  • Provide induction materials and ensure they are familiar with the workplace, company policies, hazard/incident reporting mechanisms, and safe work procedures.
  • Provide and maintain safe machinery and equipment.
  • Ensure safe handling, storage, and transportation of materials and substances.
  • Provide safe systems of work (e.g., to prevent falls on slippery surfaces).
  • Maintain the workplace so it is safe and without risks to health, including adequate welfare facilities.
  • Provide health and safety information in suitable languages and identify who to contact about OHS matters.
  • Provide interns adequate supervision throughout their placement.

Position Details

Please note: If you have multiple internship opportunities to promote through our program, you must complete a new form for each role.

The information you provide will become your position advertisement. Please touch on the following points:

  • Describe your organisation
  • Describe the team the student will work with directly
  • Tasks and responsibilities associated with the role
  • Ideal qualities of the candidate you are seeking
  • Special requirements (e.g., key professional or technical skills, specific educational requirements, work outside normal hours, licenses such as driver’s license or WWCC)
  • What a week in the role will look like
  • Position benefits
  • The key objectives this internship will achieve

Please note the following restrictions regarding the number of interns you can engage. If you require more interns for "unpaid roles", our team will ask that you provide a detailed work plan for each role.

Please ensure dates meet the 320 hour requirement only (excluding holiday periods).

Please note you will be sent an invoice by the University of Melbourne

Your organisations ABN is required for if you are awarding a nominal amount of funds to the student (stipend). We will not invoice you this amount until a student is successfully placed into the position.

Please check with your accounts department to ensure the organisation name is correct.

Students are required to undertake 320-350 hours over a 10-16 week period. Students may have flexibility to complete their internship over a shorter period with additional hours per week, particularly during the summer period.

Please note that students can commence their internship 2 weeks ahead of the semester teaching date and can work 2 weeks beyond semester end date, depending on agreed hours
The start and the end date must align within the semester dates to be counted toward intership hours(320–350 hours total).
If the internship is less than 10 weeks, it must be completed within teaching semester dates.
Please note the agreement must be signed and returned to our team prior to the intern commencing their placement with your organisation.

  • Provide the intern with clear remote onboaring process and access to necessary systems, tools and resources
  • Regular check-in, provide feedback, and support throughout the internship.
  • Meet with the student on weekly basis, voa zoom, or in Person at an agreed location.
  • Include the student in virtual team meetings or communication channels to support engagement and connection within the broader team.
  • Compliance with all relevent occupational health and safety requirements, including considerations for at home work envisonments.

  • A cover letter addressing their suitability for the position
  • Their most recent academic transcript
